Giant Bonito and Pacific Mackerel with Lionel - Feb 2017

Lionel on his boat

There's a little town on the Pacific Coast of Panama where I love to fish called Pedasi. I've been there a couple of times now and always fished with a lovely old boy called Lionel. He's an old school Panamanian fisherman and does things his own way. He has a 24ft fiberglass panga, has all his marks in his head and lines them all up using reference points on the land. There's no electronics on his boat.

Launching the Panga at dawn

There's never a dull moment with Lionel whether we're trolling, popping or jigging. On my most recent visit to Pedasi I only had time for one day out him as we were just passing through. We mixed it up and fished a few different styles to keep things interesting.

A huge Pacific Bonito

The jigging was tough with just a few bonito and a nice jack for our efforts but the trolling was rather prolific. There were plenty of small Yellowfin and other Tuna around. The cracking fish in the above photo the locals kept referring to as 'Albacore', but I'm not so sure...looks more like a very big Pacific Bonito to me!

The best specimen of our little trip together was a monster of a Sierra Mackerel. It was a proper brute and probably the biggest either Lionel or I had ever seen, getting on for near record size.  The fight was nothing short of spectacular with the fish making some very impressive runs. They really do go some when they get to that size. A great fish!
